outer vane English
A flight feather (wing quill) has two membranous portion on both sides of the stem, a wider side and a narrower side. The narrower side is called outer vane, and it is also called ventral edge, or biots. In fly tying, it is called biots in many cases, and each fiber is short and has a wide base. Biot is used commonly for the body of a fly and this biot body offers a realistic segmented body. It is also used for a wing, and a tail of fly.
