  body length English
It Is the length of the body of an animal, and the alias for body size. Specifically in the case of fish, the body length is measured from the tip of a head to the end of the spine (= standard length). In practice, the rear end is determined to be at the point where the tail fin can be bent. It is the length of the fish from the tip of the nose to where the tail fin is omitted. Therefore, the body length is shorter than the total length. (see total length). Because tail fins can be shortened by damage in natural waters, body length is used as the standard in ichthyology.
On the other hand, the total length, the larger length of animal, is used in sport fishing as well as in commercial fishing.
In the case of insects, the body length is measured with the antenna and the tail removed, namely from the tip of the head to the end of the abdomen. In a mayfly, because its tail is long, that results in a big difference between the body length and the total length. In entomology as well, body length is used as a standard.
