Atherton, John English 《person》
American, artist painter, fly fisherman, fly tyer. 1880-1980. John Atherton lived in Arlington, Vermont. He was an outstanding artist whose pictures received several awards.
He has often been referred to regarding his concept of fly patterns. He mentioned in his book "The Fly and the Fish" (1951), that the term "imitation" is used by fly fishermen similar to the term "impressionism" used by the painters of the 19th century in Paris. The imitation in a fly should appear differently from one seen in a photograph of the insect. What a fly fishermen should do is imitate the factors of the reality of the insect.
One of his well known fly patterns is the Atherton Nymph. His aforementioned book is full of beautiful illustrations all in his hand writing.
